Starlink Mini for truck drivers: plan and year-one cost
For drivers buying a Mini for themselves: the Roam tier a long haul needs and what a year of it costs, then cab setup, truck stops vs moving, and when it’s the wrong buy.
Buying note: the starlink.com buttons on this page are a referral link, so Starlink Mini Kit USA earns Starlink’s referral reward if you order through one. How the site is paid
For a driver buying for themselves, the Mini works well in a truck: it runs from the cab’s 12–24 V outlet, sets up in minutes at a truck stop, and runs on the move only on a firm in-motion mount.
Long-haul drivers usually need Roam 300GB ($80/mo) or Roam Unlimited ($175/mo). On 300GB, year one on starlink.com is $1,109 before tax: the $149 kit plus twelve bills. On a first Starlink account in your own name, a $100 referral credit can post to those bills, making the year $1,009 (our arithmetic). Fleet and business accounts never get it.

Your account, your Mini
This page is for drivers buying a Mini for themselves. That matters for two reasons.
First, the referral. Starlink’s referral is for individuals only; business and enterprise accounts don’t earn the reward. If your carrier, or your own trucking business, buys the kit on a business account, no referral applies, and that’s fine: just order it directly.
Second, the truck. Many carriers have rules about equipment in the cab and anything fixed to the truck. Starlink can’t tell you what yours allows. Our advice: ask before you buy, and get a yes in writing before you drill anything. A Mini on your own account belongs to you, so it moves with you if you change carriers.
Power in the cab
Starlink’s Mini Car Adapter plugs into a 12–24 V accessory outlet and powers the Mini over USB-C, so it covers both 12 V and 24 V outlets. A USB-C Power Delivery source rated at least 100 W also works. Nothing below that does, including 65 W laptop chargers. If your cab has an inverter or an APU with a household outlet, the kit’s own power supply plugs into that.
Starlink puts the Mini’s average draw at 25–40 W, about 15 W idle. Left on around the clock, that’s 600–960 Wh a day (our arithmetic). On a long break with the engine off, that comes from your batteries. Our advice: power it from the APU or a portable power station, not your starting batteries.
Truck stops vs moving
Parked, the kickstand is enough. Set the Mini on the catwalk, the hood or the ground beside the cab, aimed at open sky. It needs a clear 110° cone, and a trailer parked tight beside you can block part of it. Our advice: take an end spot or a row edge when you can, and keep the dish where you can see it.
Moving is allowed on Roam at up to 100 mph in approved markets, and the US is one. Starlink requires the kit to be fixed firmly to a sound, level surface with a mount designed for in-motion use, such as the Mini Mobility Mount, a permanent, sealed mount with stainless steel fasteners. Starlink also tells you to make sure the install meets Department of Transportation rules. On a company truck, that drilling is the carrier’s call.
Our safety advice, not Starlink’s
We found no Starlink guidance on using the app or adjusting the Mini while driving. Your rules on handheld phone use as a CDL driver don’t change because the Wi-Fi did. Our advice: connect before you roll, leave the app alone while moving, and fix any dropout at the next stop.
Data for long hauls
Out on the road most of the month, data adds up fast. Here’s a month by our rule of thumb (GB per day times days away), with the plan the picker would suggest:
| Time out | Light 1 GB/day | Streaming 6 GB/day | Work & video calls 9 GB/day | Work + streaming 14 GB/day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regional or part-time about 8–19 days a month | 12 GB Roam 100GB | 72 GB Roam 100GB | 108 GB Roam 300GB | 168 GB Roam 300GB |
| Over the road 20+ days a month | 26 GB Roam 100GB | 156 GB Roam 300GB | 234 GB Roam 300GB | 364 GB Roam Unlimited |
Most over-the-road drivers who stream in the evening land on Roam 300GB. Work calls by day plus video at night points to Unlimited. You can switch Roam plans at any time, so start where the table puts you and adjust after a month.
Running into Canada? Starlink’s help center treats the US, Canada and US territories as one travel area for Roam 100GB and 300GB. Check Starlink’s travel rules before any run beyond those. More on each tier: Mini plans.
Weather on the road
Starlink rates the Mini IP67 with its DC cable or Starlink Plug in place; a standard Ethernet cable breaks that seal. It runs from −22°F to 122°F, keeps working in 60 mph winds, and melts snow at up to 1 in/hr. That covers most winter nights on I-80 in Wyoming and summer afternoons on I-10 near Phoenix. Our advice: a closed cab in the sun gets hotter than the air outside, so don’t store the dish on the dash.
What the Mini in a truck won’t do
- It won’t run on the move on a kickstand. In-motion use needs a firm, permanent mount, and on a company truck the carrier decides.
- It needs open sky. Trailers parked close, overpasses and tree-lined lots cause dropouts.
- On a congested network, Starlink says Roam customers are likelier to see slowdowns than Residential Max customers.
- Past the data cap, Roam 100GB and 300GB slow to about 500 Kbps.
Skip the Mini, or wait, if…
- you’re buying for a fleet, or on a business account: Starlink’s referral is for individuals only
- you drive a company truck and the carrier says no to outside equipment or mounts: ask first, buy second
- the job is a short contract or a single hauling season: a referral is for people who keep Starlink
- your Mini came from a store such as Walmart or Best Buy: Starlink won’t attach a referral to it now (your options)
Buyer questions
Is the Starlink Mini good for truck drivers?
For a driver buying for themselves, yes: it runs from the cab’s 12–24 V outlet with Starlink’s car adapter, works at any truck stop with open sky, and draws 25–40 W on average. Long hauls usually need Roam 300GB or Unlimited.
Can you use a Starlink Mini in a semi truck while driving?
Starlink allows in-motion use on Roam at up to 100 mph in the US, but only with the Mini firmly fixed on a mount designed for in-motion use, such as the Mini Mobility Mount. On a company truck, get the carrier’s OK before you drill (our advice).
Will the Mini run on a 24 V truck outlet?
Starlink’s Mini Car Adapter is made for 12–24 V accessory outlets. A USB-C Power Delivery source rated at least 100 W works too; anything weaker won’t run it.
What Starlink plan is best for truckers?
By our rule of thumb, a driver out 26 days a month who streams in the evening uses about 156 GB, which fits Roam 300GB ($80/mo). Work calls plus streaming points to Unlimited ($175/mo). You can switch Roam plans at any time.
What does a Starlink Mini cost a trucker for the first year?
On Roam 300GB, the usual long-haul tier, $1,109 before tax: the $149 kit plus 12 × $80/mo. On a personal account whose $100 referral credit posts, $1,009 (our arithmetic). Fleet and business accounts don’t get the credit.
Can my trucking company buy it through a referral link?
No. Starlink’s referral is for individuals only; business and enterprise accounts don’t earn the reward. It fits drivers buying a Mini for themselves, on their own account.
Does the Starlink Mini work in Canada on a cross-border run?
Starlink’s help center treats the US, Canada and US territories as one travel area for Roam 100GB and 300GB. Check Starlink’s travel rules before any run beyond those.
