Starlink Mini for boats: which plan, what year one costs
Which Roam tier your water needs and what a year of it costs, what Ocean Mode adds, how to mount the Mini, and when a boater is better served by other hardware.
Buying note: the starlink.com buttons on this page are a referral link, so Starlink Mini Kit USA earns Starlink’s referral reward if you order through one. How the site is paid
On lakes and rivers, yes: every Roam plan covers inland water, even underway. Near the coast, Roam allows 5 consecutive days or 60 days a year. Beyond 12 nautical miles, you need Roam Unlimited plus Ocean Mode at $6/GB.
Starlink lists the Mini as supported for in-motion use on boats, but its boat guide recommends the Performance kit for maritime use and says nothing specific about the Mini and salt water. For lake and river boaters, the Mini is a good fit. Year one on Roam 100GB is $809 before tax ($149 kit plus twelve bills), or $709 if a $100 referral credit posts to a first-time account’s service bills (our arithmetic).

Three kinds of water, three sets of rules
| Where | What Starlink allows | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Inland lakes, rivers, marinas | Use at anchor and underway, in your home country | Any Roam plan |
| Coastal waters | Up to 5 consecutive days, and 60 days in total in any 12 months | Any Roam plan |
| Beyond 12 nautical miles | Ocean Mode only, billed per GB on top of the plan until you turn it off | Roam Unlimited |
One gray area: Starlink doesn’t publish where inland water ends on big tidal bays and sounds. Our advice: treat them as coastal, count your days, and ask Starlink support before your season if it matters.
Five US waters
Lake of the Ozarks. Inland water, so any Roam plan works, at the dock or cruising. Wooded bluffs in narrow coves can cut into the Mini’s 110° view of the sky; open water is easy.
Lake Powell. Also inland. The catch is the canyon walls: tuck into a narrow side canyon for the night and part of the sky disappears. Anchor where the walls open up.
Chesapeake Bay. A tidal bay, so the gray area above applies. Count the days as coastal and you stay on the safe side.
Florida Keys. Coastal water: 5 days in a row and 60 days a year. A run past 12 nautical miles, like a Gulf Stream crossing to the Bahamas, means Ocean Mode on Roam Unlimited. Abroad, where Starlink offers service, Roam Unlimited works for up to 30 days at a time after travel registration.
Puget Sound. Another sound, so count coastal days. Starlink’s help center treats the US and Canada as one travel area for Roam 100GB and 300GB, which helps in the San Juan Islands.
Ocean Mode: how the per-GB bill adds up
Ocean Mode is on Roam Unlimited only, at $6/GB in the US on top of the $175/mo plan. Once it’s on, Starlink bills every GB you use, wherever you use it, until you turn it off. A day offshore by our rule of thumb:
| Use | GB a day | Ocean Mode, per day |
|---|---|---|
| Light maps, messages, email, weather | 1 | $6 |
| Streaming a couple of hours of HD video a day | 6 | $36 |
| Work & video calls a workday online, calls, uploads | 9 | $54 |
Our advice: turn Ocean Mode off as soon as you’re back inside 12 nautical miles. Forget, and a week of streaming at the dock adds about $252 (our arithmetic).
Mounting, spray and power
On Roam, the Mini can run underway, but Starlink requires it fixed firmly to a sound, level surface with a mount designed for in-motion use, such as the Mini Mobility Mount. That mount is permanent and sealed, fits wood, fiberglass, metal or plastic, and uses corrosion-resistant stainless steel fasteners. Starlink’s guide also tells you to check that a boat install meets maritime rules.
Starlink rates the Mini IP67 with the DC cable or Starlink Plug installed; a standard Ethernet cable breaks the seal. It keeps working in 60 mph winds. On salt water specifically, Starlink says nothing about the Mini. Our advice, not Starlink’s: keep the cable plugged in, rinse salt off with fresh water after a coastal trip, and check the connector each season.
Power works as on land: a USB-C source rated at least 100 W, Starlink’s car adapter in a 12 V accessory socket if your helm has one, or shore power with the kit supply. It draws 25–40 W on average.
Which plan for your boat
Weekend lake boaters usually fit Roam 100GB ($55/mo). Liveaboards and long coastal cruises push toward Roam 300GB ($80/mo) or Unlimited. Offshore means Unlimited, because Ocean Mode is only there. The plan picker handles inland, coastal and offshore answers; tier detail is on Mini plans.
What the Mini on a boat won’t do
- Starlink’s boat guide recommends the Performance kit for maritime use, not the Mini.
- Coastal use stops at 5 consecutive days or 60 days a year unless Ocean Mode is on.
- Ocean Mode bills every GB until you switch it off, on top of $175/mo.
- Starlink publishes nothing on the Mini and salt water.
- On a congested network, Starlink says Roam customers are likelier to see slowdowns than Residential Max customers.
Skip the Mini, or wait, if…
- you cruise offshore, beyond 12 nautical miles, most of the time: Starlink’s maritime-focused hardware may serve you better
- you’d use it only in boating season and keep it paused the rest of the year: paused months don’t count, and a referral is for people who keep Starlink
- it’s for a charter, guide or fishing business: Starlink’s referral is for individuals only
- your Mini came from West Marine or another store: Starlink won’t attach a referral to it now (your options)
Buyer questions
Can you use a Starlink Mini on a boat?
Yes. Every Roam plan covers inland lakes, rivers and marinas in your home country, underway too. Coastal waters are limited to 5 consecutive days or 60 days in 12 months. Beyond 12 nautical miles you need Ocean Mode on Roam Unlimited.
Does the Starlink Mini work on the ocean?
Beyond 12 nautical miles from shore, only with Ocean Mode, which is on Roam Unlimited alone and costs $6/GB on top of the plan in the US. Starlink’s boat guide recommends its Performance kit for maritime use.
Is the Starlink Mini waterproof?
Starlink rates it IP67 with the DC cable or Starlink Plug installed; a standard Ethernet cable breaks that rating. Starlink says nothing specific about the Mini and salt water.
Can I use the Mini while the boat is moving?
Yes on Roam, if it’s mounted firmly with a mount designed for in-motion use, such as the Mini Mobility Mount. Starlink also tells you to check that the install meets maritime rules.
What does a Starlink Mini for a boat cost in year one?
For lake and river boating on Roam 100GB, $809 before tax: the $149 kit plus 12 × $55/mo, or $709 if Starlink’s $100 referral credit posts (our arithmetic). Offshore use means Roam Unlimited at $175/mo plus Ocean Mode per GB.
Can I take the Mini to the Bahamas?
Roam 100GB and 300GB are for your home country. Roam Unlimited works abroad, where Starlink offers service, for up to 30 days in a row after travel registration with a passport or other photo ID. Offshore legs still need Ocean Mode.
