Starlink Mini for camping: the plan and year-one cost
How much data a camping trip uses, the Roam tier that covers it and its yearly cost, then trees, canyons, weather and off-grid power, and when it isn’t worth buying.
Buying note: the starlink.com buttons on this page are a referral link, so Starlink Mini Kit USA earns Starlink’s referral reward if you order through one. How the site is paid
The Mini is built for camping: it weighs 2.43 lb, runs on 25–40 W, and works from −22°F to 122°F. The hard parts are trees and keeping it powered off-grid.
Most campers land on Roam 100GB at $55/mo, which Starlink calls about a week of typical use. Year one on starlink.com is $809 before tax ($149 kit plus twelve bills), or $709 if a first-time account’s $100 referral credit posts (our arithmetic). It suits people who camp all year, not once a summer.

Trees, canyons and the 110° sky
The Mini looks at a 110° cone of sky. A clear cone means a steady connection. A tree line or a canyon wall inside it means dropouts.
The fix is usually to move the dish, not the tent. With the kit’s power supply, the 49.2 ft cable lets the Mini sit in a meadow or on a rock while you camp in the shade. Our advice: run the obstruction check in the Starlink app before you pitch the tent, not after dinner.
Weather: rain, wind, snow, heat
Starlink rates the Mini IP67 with the DC cable or Starlink Plug installed. A standard Ethernet cable breaks that rating, so keep the power cable seated. It works from −22°F to 122°F, keeps working in 60 mph winds, and melts snow at up to 1 in/hr.
The dish handles wind; the kickstand is another matter. With the kickstand it weighs only 2.56 lb. Our advice: in gusty desert wind, weigh the stand down with a rock or bag, or use a mount.
Off-grid power
Starlink puts the Mini’s average draw at 25–40 W and idle at about 15 W. Left on around the clock, that’s 600–960 Wh a day, or 360 Wh idling (our arithmetic). Two ways to cover it at camp:
- A power station with a USB-C PD port rated at least 100 W. Starlink is clear: nothing under 100 W runs the Mini, including 65 W ports. You need Starlink’s USB-C cable.
- A power station or inverter with an AC outlet, using the kit’s own power supply.
Every 100 Wh of usable battery buys about 2.5–4 hours at the average draw (our arithmetic, before conversion losses). Solar can top a station up on longer trips; how much depends on panel size and sun. Our advice: switch the Mini off when nobody’s online, overnight included.
Data per trip
Starlink describes Roam 100GB as about one week of typical use. Unused data doesn’t roll over, and past the cap you drop to about 500 Kbps. Here’s a month by our rule of thumb, with the plan the picker would suggest:
| Camping per month | Light 1 GB/day | Streaming 6 GB/day | Work & video calls 9 GB/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| A few weekends about 2–7 days a month | 5 GB Roam 100GB | 30 GB Roam 100GB | 45 GB Roam 100GB |
| Most weekends about 8–19 days a month | 12 GB Roam 100GB | 72 GB Roam 100GB | 108 GB Roam 300GB |
Your first year, bill by billMini + Roam 100GB
You can switch Roam plans at any time, so a summer of long trips can run on 300GB and drop back after. Tier detail: Mini plans.
BLM land, national forests, dispersed sites
BLM land in Utah and Nevada. Wide sky, few trees, lots of wind and dust. The Mini connects easily; weigh down the stand and keep the cable seated.
National forests. Dispersed sites along forest roads in the Cascades or the Appalachians often sit under thick canopy. Look for a meadow, a burn scar or a road pullout for the dish, and run the cable to camp.
Overlanding. Most overlanders set up at camp. If you want it running on the trail, Starlink allows in-motion use on Roam up to 100 mph, but only with a firm mount designed for in-motion use. Car-based trips: Mini for car.
What the Mini at camp won’t do
- It won’t hold a steady connection under trees or deep in a canyon.
- It needs a power source the whole time it’s online.
- Past Roam 100GB’s cap, you get about 500 Kbps: messages and maps, not video.
- Running it all day takes real battery capacity; plan your power before the trip.
Skip the Mini, or wait, if…
- you camp once a year: a kit you’d use for one trip isn’t what a referral is for, and a phone hotspot or campground Wi-Fi may do
- you’d camp only in summer and keep it paused the rest of the year: paused months don’t count toward the referral
- it’s for an outfitter or guide business: Starlink’s referral is for individuals only
- your Mini came from a store such as Cabela’s or Bass Pro Shops: Starlink won’t attach a referral to it now (your options)
Buyer questions
Is the Starlink Mini good for camping?
Yes, if your site has open sky. It weighs 2.43 lb without the kickstand, has Wi-Fi built in, draws 25–40 W on average and runs from −22°F to 122°F. Trees and canyon walls are the usual problem, not the weather.
Does the Starlink Mini work under trees?
Not well. It wants open sky across a 110° cone, and branches inside that cone cause dropouts. Put the dish in a clearing and run the app’s obstruction check.
How long will a power station run a Starlink Mini?
Every 100 Wh of usable battery runs it about 2.5–4 hours at Starlink’s average draw of 25–40 W (our arithmetic, before conversion losses). The station needs a USB-C PD port rated at least 100 W or an AC outlet for the kit supply.
Can the Starlink Mini stay out in the rain?
Starlink rates it IP67 with the DC cable or Starlink Plug installed, and it melts snow at up to 1 in/hr. A standard Ethernet cable breaks that rating.
What does a Starlink Mini for camping cost in year one?
On Roam 100GB, $809 before tax: the $149 kit plus 12 × $55/mo. If Starlink’s $100 referral credit posts to the service bills, $709 (our arithmetic). A summer on 300GB adds the difference for those months.
Which Starlink plan is best for camping?
Most campers fit Roam 100GB ($55/mo); Starlink calls it about a week of typical use. Longer trips with streaming or work move you to Roam 300GB ($80/mo). You can switch plans at any time.
