Ordering a Starlink Mini before a trip: how far ahead, and what starts the clock
Order early enough to set the Mini up once at home, and late enough that the first bill doesn't start weeks before you leave.
Buying note: the starlink.com buttons on this page are a referral link, so Starlink Mini Kit USA earns Starlink’s referral reward if you order through one. How the site is paid
- Starlink doesn't publish a US delivery window for the Mini, so build in slack and watch the order status after you order.
- Starlink starts billing on the earliest of activation, the 7th day after delivery, or, when no delivery date exists, the 30th day after shipping.
- New Mini kits ordered on starlink.com come with an Activation Benefit applied at checkout, and Starlink may bill its value when the kit is still unactivated a week after it arrives.
- A store can hand you a Mini the same day, but a store kit can't carry a referral, and Starlink won't add one later.
- Do the first setup at home, with the power gear you'll use on the road.
Starlink doesn’t publish a US delivery window for the Mini, so order early enough to set it up once at home, but not so early that billing starts weeks before you leave. Our rule of thumb is to have the kit in hand about a week before departure, because a week after delivery is when Starlink starts billing and when the Activation Benefit deadline runs out.
How far ahead to order a Starlink Mini
Starlink’s help center explains what happens to an order but, as of Nov 4, 2026, gives no US delivery estimate for the Mini. Here is what it does tell you:
- Your order details show a status that moves from Pending to Preparing Shipment to Shipped, with a tracking link at the last step.
- You can change the shipping address or cancel only while the order says Pending. Starlink says the switch to Preparing Shipment can happen within 1–3 hours of ordering.
- Holding a shipment back isn’t an option, per Starlink. Once the order ships, it points you to the delivery carrier to manage delivery.
Owner reports vary. In a Reddit thread from June 2026, an owner described a Mini stuck at “Preparing shipment” for weeks, and commenters said picking one up in a store had been faster for them. One thread isn’t a forecast. It is a good reason not to order three days before you leave.
So work backward from the day you leave:
- A date that can’t move (a booked campsite in Yellowstone, a family reunion on the Outer Banks): order with several weeks of slack, and accept that billing may start before you go.
- A flexible date: order, watch the status, and set the departure once the Mini ships.
- Leaving in a day or two: a starlink.com delivery isn’t a plan. See the store section below.
Ordering early costs little, and you can count it. From the 7th day after delivery, each extra day at home is a day of your first paid month used before the trip. With the Mini on the $55 Roam 100GB tier (Starlink US list, Nov 4, 2026), that’s roughly $1.83 a day (our arithmetic: $55 ÷ 30). Those days aren’t wasted, either: they’re your test run. Missing the trip because the box hasn’t come costs more.
What starts billing and the Activation Benefit clock
Two clocks start when the box lands on your porch.
Billing. Starlink’s US contract sets the first charge on whichever of three dates comes first: the day you activate the kit, 7 days after Starlink delivers it, or, if there’s no delivery date, 30 days after it ships. The plan you picked starts running a week after delivery even if the Mini never leaves its box.
The Activation Benefit. Starlink adds an Activation Benefit automatically at checkout to new Mini kits ordered on starlink.com in the US. It doesn’t say what the benefit is worth. It does set conditions: a new Starlink account and an activated kit. Leave the kit unactivated for more than a week after it arrives and Starlink may charge your payment method for the benefit’s value. What’s known about it is on the Activation Benefit page.
Both deadlines land on the same day. Read together (our reading), the simplest plan is to activate the Mini the day it arrives and set it up at home, not to leave it sealed until the trip.
| Step | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You order on starlink.com | Status: Pending | Check the shipping address now; it can lock within 1–3 hours |
| Preparing Shipment, then Shipped | A tracking link appears | Delivery changes go through the carrier |
| Delivery day | Both 7-day clocks start | Open the box, activate, set up at home |
| 7 days after delivery | Billing starts if it hasn’t already; an unactivated kit may be billed for the Activation Benefit | Be activated by now |
| Departure day | Your first paid month is under way | Pack the exact gear you tested |
Store pickup today vs a starlink.com delivery
Best Buy, Walmart, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s are all on Starlink’s US retailer list, and a store with stock can hand you a Mini the same day. Starlink doesn’t publish which locations have it, so call before you drive over.
| Store pickup | starlink.com order | |
|---|---|---|
| Kit price | Best Buy and Home Depot last seen at $249 (RV Mobile Internet, Oct 6, 2026); check the live price | $149 (Starlink US list, Nov 4, 2026) |
| In your hands | Same day, if the store has stock | After Pending, Preparing Shipment and Shipped; no published US window |
| Shipping | None for pickup | Starlink adds shipping and handling; the amount shows at checkout |
| Activation Benefit | Starlink describes it only for starlink.com orders | Added at checkout for new Mini kits |
| Referral credit | Not available on store kits | New US customers who order through a referral link get a $100 credit after two months subscribed |
The last row is the one a rushed store run can’t undo. A Mini picked up at a store or bought on a marketplace never shows a referral; per Starlink’s help center, support can’t attach one afterwards. If your trip really does start tomorrow, the store is still the practical answer, and the Mini works the same either way. Already bought one? Here’s what you can still do. The full price comparison is on starlink.com vs stores, and how a starlink.com order plays out across the first year’s bills is on year one, bill by bill.
Do a first setup at home before you go
Do the first activation at home, where you have a fallback connection. Starlink’s Mini setup article is the reference. A short checklist:
- Check the box. Starlink lists the Mini with built-in Wi-Fi, a kickstand, the Mini Pipe Adapter and Flat Mount, a 49.2 ft DC power cable, a power supply and a Starlink Plug. A car adapter, a USB-C cable and an in-motion mount are sold separately.
- Activate and name the network. Set up the Starlink app and account, then pick a Wi-Fi name and password you’ll remember at a dark campsite. Join every device you’re bringing.
- Test the power you’ll use on the road. If that’s a USB-C power bank or a car charger, Starlink says it must be USB Power Delivery rated at least 100 W (20 V at 5 A), used with Starlink’s USB-C to barrel-jack cable. Nothing under 100 W runs the Mini. Car power options are on Mini for car trips.
- Set it up outside. The Mini sees a 110° cone of sky. Put it in the backyard or on the driveway, run the app’s obstruction check, and learn what a clear view looks like before you’re parked under pines.
- Pack what worked. The cables, adapters and power source you tested go in one bag, so nothing gets left on the garage shelf.
For the trip month itself, Starlink pitches its smallest Roam tier, 100GB for $55 (Starlink US list, Nov 4, 2026), at occasional trips; Mini plans compares it with the bigger tiers.
Skip the Mini, or wait, if…
- you need the Mini for one trip or one season: the referral is built for people who stay subscribed
- you’d mostly keep it paused as a backup: Standby time doesn’t count toward the two cycles
- you’re buying for a company or a fleet: only individual accounts qualify
- your Mini already came from a store: Starlink won’t attach a referral after the fact (what you can do)
Buyer questions
How long does a Starlink Mini take to ship?
Starlink doesn't publish a US delivery window for the Mini. Your order status moves from Pending to Preparing Shipment to Shipped, with a tracking link once it ships, and you can check it in your Starlink account.
When does Starlink start charging for a Mini?
Whichever comes first of these: the day you switch it on, the 7th day after delivery, or the 30th day after shipping when no delivery date was recorded. A kit left in its box still starts billing a week after delivery.
Can I delay shipping so billing starts closer to my trip?
No. Starlink's help center rules out holding a shipment back. You can change the shipping address or cancel only while the order shows Pending, which can end within 1–3 hours of ordering.
Can I buy a Starlink Mini in a store and add a referral later?
No. Starlink's help center is clear on this: a Mini from a store or an online marketplace never shows a referral, and support can't attach one afterwards.
Is the Starlink Mini in stock at stores near me?
Starlink doesn't publish store stock. Best Buy, Walmart, Home Depot, Tractor Supply, Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's are on its US retailer list, so call the location before you drive over.
